Hello!

The first post will be an introduction into my life and work as an illustrator. Here's a picture of the face behind the work!

I graduated from university in 2019 with a Graphic Design degree under my belt and I wasn't really sure how I was going to make anything of myself. I just knew that I wanted to be my own boss.

Throughout my final year at university the main focus of my work had been children's book illustration and book making. There's something about making a book that I find so enjoyable. Being able to hold that object and flick through the pages just like a regular book makes me really happy. It's like having a whole museum in an A5 booklet.

My original goal when I was fresh out of university was to get a book that I wrote published. The book is called "How to pet a dog" and is a sensory story that teaches children about how to behave around dogs. The sensory elements were added into the story to help engage children that may have sensory processing difficulties.

However this plan never took off as once I'd graduated the digital files for the book on my USB stick had corrupted. Any creatives worst nightmare! I didn't want to recreate the book as I felt that my style was always changing and improving. I learned my lesson and moved on. Now I always back up my important files.

Fast forward a year and a half and we're in the middle of a pandemic. Which wasn't really how I planned the first year out of university to go. However I've definitely achieved a lot in a small space of time. I created products for my online shop, wrote and illustrated two books, won an award and illustrated the cover of a magazine!

I find that I'm often frustrated at my progress because I'm still working another job to pay the bills and other illustrators/creatives seem to have everything together. Having time to reflect on my work after education has been beneficial. After all it's not just about my work life, there's been some pretty major shifts in my personal life recently too.

This blog will be a great way to reflect on my journey as I find my way through the illustration industry and grow my confidence.
